We’ll be back at it again with Allie tonight as she will race again in Syracuse with the Kuleszo Racing Team. And Jon won last week at Paradise in a vintage car. Sounds like it’s time for an interview huh?
In some sad news we lost my long time neighbor on Monday and we spent a good deal of time next door with his wife and kids as they got ready for calling hours today and the funeral on Friday. Bob Klaus was a good man, a car guy, an engineer at GE and a really good golfer. Yep, he was the neighbor you always hoped for. Enjoy golfing in heaven Bob!
Now let’s chat more about what we have for you on the Audio Page as we get closer to another full race weekend. Mike Maresca recapped his weekend that included a rain out and a jingle he was involved in at Fonda that put him back a bit before racing back up to seventh.

| New on the Audio Page from Skyline Raceway:
After the heat races:
Tyler Yeagle talked about his win in the first Street Stock heat and how well things have been going.
Bob Buono got teased about his initial start and told me about leading every lap to win his heat race.
Brian White pulled away to win his Sportsman heat and talked about how good his racecar was.
Bill Deckelman won the second heat race and told me how good his car was and where he is running.
Jimmy Zacharias beat the open motors with his crate and talked about what he had to do to win.
Chuck Miller evened the score for crates with his heat win and described what he needed to do later.
After the feature races:
Tyler Yeagle dominated the Street Stock feature for a win and talked about dealing with slower cars.
Brian White lead all but two laps on his way to a win and talked about how much the racetrack was.
Bill Deckelman picked up a lot of spots late to finish 2nd and compared himself to the race winner.
Jim Rothwell finished 3rd in his backup car and told me what he needed to do to be a little faster.
Chuck Miller led the first two laps before fading to fourth and spoke about how he fell back late.
Nate Powers won the final race of the night and celebrated with his CNY friends in victory lane.
Allie and I had a fun night as we headed south on route 81 to Skyline Raceway park just south of Cortland. As all of you probably know by now Skyline has always been one of my favorite tracks. I just love the family atmosphere and the uniqueness of the place. And it was fun last night.
A nice field of 26 Sportsman were on hand as the open engines took on the crates. They split the heat races 2-2 but the open motors had the top three spots in the feature. Brian White, who also won Saturday night at Thunder Mountain, took the lead on a lap three restart and won by a comfortable margin despite Bill Deckelman closing late.
As is the case with a lot of Sportsman racing these days there were just three cautions. When we look back at 2017 many years from now we’ll remember this as the golden age of Sportsman racing. With the costs of running a Modified higher than most can even think about, many great racers are stuck in Sportsman and the competition level is higher than it’s ever been in my opinion with talented new drivers joining the veterans.
Tyler Yeagle dominated the night with his Street Stock and the only problem he had was when his car shut off on its way to the scales. Let’s hope he does not have a problem that will show up this weekend huh?
Nate Powers took the Chris Bonoffski car to victory lane in a caution filled Four Cylinder feature race. He had some fans in his fellow racers in the stands and they got to celebrate in victory lane with Nate. As for Chris…I’ll have news on him up Saturday as someone was shaking down a new car for him in a new division. Hmmm.
I’ll be back in the studio today and will be joined by one of the best up and coming motocross racers as they get ready for Unadilla this weekend. I’ll put that one tomorrow as well as one I did with one of our local riders who hopes to do well this weekend. Plus I’ll have some with our dirt racers too so be sure to come back.

Dean Catlin previews tonight’s three division show at Skyline featuring 602 crates versus opens.
Tony Veneziano reports on the World of Outlaws from I-55 and looks ahead to the Knoxville Nationals.
I had a good day on Monday as I got some work done in the studio and did some writing for the Syracuse Post Standard and Syracuse.com. How about Joe Gosek at Oswego huh? And for the 61 year old to win on Retro Night just seemed right didn’t it? Nice job 00 Joe!
Two races for you to attend tonight as the SDS races at Ransomville and a three division show at Skyline. I need to be up early on Wednesday so I’ll be heading to Skyline with Allie so look for stuff from that race up here tomorrow. And Monday’s race at Merrittville was rained out and has been moved to Wednesday.
Now let’s chat more about what we have for you today on the Audio Page starting with a racer who had a big win last week. Mike Mahaney chats about his Saturday night at Grandview, why we haven’t seen him in a 360 Sprint Car of late as well as last week’s big win at Fonda.
Tommy Collins discussed a gear change he was making as well as a fuel cell issue they had Saturday as well as how bad things seem to happen when you start towards the back.
Kyle Inman remembers a frustrating night on Saturday at Genesee, why it seems only new tires get cut on the track instead of older rubber and talked about racing on the cheap Sunday.
Dean Catlin previews tonight’s three division show at Skyline featuring 602 crates versus opens and tells me about a big change he is making for the 2018 season.

| New on the Audio Page for today from Utica Rome Speedway:
After the heat races:
Matt Janczuk spoke about winning the first Sportsman heat race and how fast the racetrack was.
Brent Joy walked me through the three wide move he made on the top to win with a last lap pass.
Bobby Varin won the first Modified heat race and told me how he made it to the front quickly.
Matt Sheppard remembered his win at Canandaigua on Saturday and spoke about his race victory.
Frank Hyatt led every lap to win his Pro Stock heat and talked about his love of tacky racetracks.
Brad Williams finished third in his first ever Sportsman heat and told me how wide he went once.
After the features:
Matt Janczuk told the crowd how he made a move in the final corner to get the Sportsman win.
Matt Sheppard won his 22nd feature of the year and spoke about seeing the leader have an issue.
Mike Maresca spoke about his third place finish and compared himself to the eventual race winner.
Bobby Varin went from ninth to fourth and told me why he thought he was a fourth place car.
Claude Hutchings Jr. talked about his eighth place finish and wished his sponsor a speedy recovery.
Danny Varin led the first 19 laps before going up in smoke and told me what he thinks went wrong.
Mike Welch won the Pro Stock race after a tough night on Saturday and talked about the fast track.
Jimmy Moyer got the win in the Novice Sportsman feature and spoke about his in car phone call.
I had a fun night as Allie and I went to Utica Rome Speedway on a night when the clay track surface was lightning fast. It was fun to see the cars hauling the mail around this track and the racing was really good too.
Matt Sheppard picked up his 22nd win of the season and went undefeated on the weekend as he also won on Saturday night at Canandaigua. Danny Varin led early but hurt an engine after crossing the line on lap 20 ending his night. Even though Varin was leading Sheppard was closing at the time and then had the lead on the restart pulling away from there for the victory.
Matt Janczuk made last corner pass of Mark Effner to win the Sportsman race although I found out later that Effner ran out of gas. I wondered how the gap shrunk so quickly in the final laps.
They also had Autograph Night so the fans got to meet the drivers up close and personal on the front stretch. As I chatted with drivers Allie took some photos for me so look for those and lots more on the Audio Page.
I also recorded another 13 chats that we will save for during the week so look for those to come up really soon.
And thanks to Aaron Jacobs and his crew for plugging a tire for me at the track. I pulled out and knew something was wrong. My right rear was almost flat as I ran over a screw. They pulled out the screw, used a plug kit we borrowed from another racer and then they put air in it and off we went. I knew the right thing to do was turn around and handle that in the pits. Thanks guy…really. If I had a flat on the Thruway it would have been really expensive.
I’ll be back in the studio today so look for chats from there up tomorrow as well as some of what we did on Sunday. I hope your week gets off to a great start and I hope to see you back here tomorrow. Sorry about yesterday!
