It was a nice relaxing day for me on Monday as I only had about three hours of work to do. I kept the studio quiet for a day and decided to put up some stuff I recorded over the weekend, but today we will get busy and hit the record button several times.
On the site are seven new conversations from Rolling Wheels and Utica Rome. Plus we added a lot of new photo bins yesterday afternoon and still have a few more that I will do later today. So keep checking back for that.
There is a lot of racing going on this week as Big Diamond goes tonight followed by Fonda on Wednesday and Utica Rome on Thursday. The Lucas Oil Late Models headline the show at Fonda and Utica Rome and I will be there on Thursday night.
So now with very little else to report, I’ll go right into what is new for today on the Audio Page. I begin with some Sprint Car chatter from Friday night. Kramer Williamson thought back on some of his history at Rolling Wheels as he got ready to go this past Friday. He talked about being in Central New York in July, wondered why he & The Fast Track get along so well and summed up how his season has gone so far.
Bob Reis explained why he got off to a late start and why he was racing a Sprint Car on clay. He told me why he made the switch, why he decided to stay away from Oswego because of tire costs and where the racecar he had with him came from.
Matt Hulsizer just moved from a Sportsman to a big block and told me how he has been doing. He talked about why he made the move, how much of an adjustment it has been and how much he still has to learn about these ultra fast racecars.
Jim Spano told me why he came to Utica Rome with a very under powered crate Sportsman. He talked about the weight break he would get, wondered how competitive he could be and if he may pick up a more powerful open motor. And yes, he was the only car from Weedsport last week to go to Utica Rome on Sunday.
Matt Janczuk talked about winning the last two Sunday races for the Open Motor Sportsman at Utica Rome. He wondered how the new clay would do on the first week out with it, explained why the fans don’t mind a little longer break to make the racing better and why he is doing so well in the seat.
John Wilber was getting ready to race his Sportsman on Friday and talked about taking it easy this season. He described some of the tough luck he has had, how tough it can be when you don’t run weekly at a track and remembered the last Weedsport race of the season.
Stephen Denton spoke about his Four Cylinder Super Stock win and his gains with his Sportsman. He talked about how nice it was to get back to victory lane after an almost two month absence, how the surface was last week at Utica Rome and why a slicker track often makes for better racing.

Bret Belden just hot lapped his Pro Stock and offered his impression of the new clay in the turns.
Willy Decker has a pair of feature wins this season and talked about the need for more bite.
After the heat races:
Bret Belden met the fans in an autograph session and spoke with me about his Pro Stock win.
Glenn Forward makes his debut on the site with his first ever interview after winning his heat.
Ted Lamb was just getting ready to head to the front stretch and paused to chat about his heat win.
Steve Hulsizer told me about his Modified heat win and wondered why his motor was smoking.
Willy Decker made a nice move get the lead and compared it to an old fashioned slide job.
After the feature races:
Rocky Warner spoke about his Pro Stock feature win down in victory lane with Mike Mallett.
Tom Denton came home in second place and told Mike Mallett where he needs to be better.
Steve Hulsizer won his first Utica Rome race since 2002 and described it to Mike Mallett.
Kenny Tremont had his best finish of the year at Utica Rome with a second and talked about it.
Ronnie Johnson finished third and told Mike Mallett about racing Kenny Tremont in the past.
Stewart Friesen came home in fourth place and told me about the work he will be doing today.
I had another fun night as I did my third race in as many days. My daughter Allie accompanied me to the Utica Rome Speedway for Autograph Night. Once again, I should have looked at the schedule as I could have had her wear a shirt that could have been signed. But she still got a lot of autographs and had a great time.
It was fun to see the race day through her eyes and having access to the Tired Iron Repair golf cart made it easy for us to get around and see a lot of stuff. (Thanks yet again Claude!) I did the usual lot of pre race interviews as well as many for Go Action Online as well. It was fun to have my daughter be able to see me do what I love and at the same time remind her there are other ways to make a living than just the ones they tell you about in school.
It was a fun night and the new clay that was laid down in the corners was pretty manageable. Sure there were a few spots and yes there was some dust in the later races but anyone who does this type of project at mid season has to do it the same way. You get it hard and get a good base, then you start to tear into it more and eventually make it tackier. But all that does not happen in one week!
Steve Hulsizer was the star of the show as his smoking Modified won both his feature and his heat leading every lap along the way. Make sure to listen to my chats with him over the course of the night as he tried to figure out why the car was smoking.
But when you start on the pole, you gotta go for it. He did and he earned his first Modified win at the track since 2002. But he may have paid a price for it as there was a puddle underneath it in victory lane. Hey, it was classic Steve Hulsizer and anyone who has seen him race, blow motors and flip cars knows that this to be true.
Also make sure to listen to the Bret Belden interview after his heat win. He told me what he did after he took the checkered flag to see what the track was like in a part that he did not get to try under green. Hey, I never thought of that before. And I thought I was smart my first few races this year for letting fast cars by me in hot laps before the green so I could follow them and learn their lines.
And I also got to give a bonus point to Ronnie Johnson who finished in third place in the Modified feature. He was right behind Kenny Tremont and proceeded to tell all the fans that they have not seen the last of Kenny in victory lane. It was a nice touch from a guy who ran against him for years on Friday night when Albany Saratoga was the place to be. Classy move Ronnie!
Along the way I also took a lot of photos. Those are up now as well as some more that I uploaded last night. Many more will go up later this afternoon so be sure to keep checking the filmstrip at the side if the page. And yes, that little girl is my Allie you see in the photos with the drivers.
Thanks to everyone for the great time we had. We saw some real good racing at a track I have always loved and having my oldest with me just made it even better. But now I need to crash at get some sleep. I have not been sleeping well as I just have so much on my mind. So today I hope to catch up and get back in the studio later as I have a short week with Utica Rome on Thursday.

After time trials and qualifying:
Chuck Hossfeld talked about earning the quick time award as the ROC Modifieds took over Oswego.
Ray Graham won the first Super Modified heat race and explained how he got to the front.
Joey Payne picked up seven spots to win his heat and talked about how some racing luck helped.
Dan Connors Jr. led every lap to win his Super Modified heat and told me about his loose car.
Kyle Ebersole walked me through the low move he made on lap six to get the ROC Modified win.
Jan Leaty told me about his win and the work they were doing to another one of their Modifieds.
Rusty Smith picked up the win in the final Modified heat and told me what he was worried about.
After the features:
Ray Graham talked about passing his son for the lead and described the mistake that Kody made.
Joe Gosek explained how he picked up four spots in the last 13 laps to finish in third place.
Bobby Haynes Jr. finished in fourth place and described how drained he was after 61 laps.
Joey Payne had some contact with the car in front of him and explained why it happened.
Zane Zeiner drove a smoking car to victory lane and talked about having zero oil pressure.
Tony Hirschman came home in second place and explained how the car changed after a pit stop.
Erick Rudolph had an up & down day and told me why they did not change much in the race.
I had a fun day but before I got into the gates at the Oswego Speedway I lost a point as I failed to look at the start time and got there during the heat races. “Oh no!” I said to myself as I signed in looking like a dummy. I should have looked, I assumed it started later and I was lucky to get what I got yesterday. Sorry guys…bonus point subtracted!
So I hustled upstairs to see the heats that were left and then rushed into the infield to talk with the six heat winners in the open wheel divisions. It was tough for me as I do not know these people very well so I do not know the faces well enough to pick them out of a crowded pit box. I also did not know where they pit and a lot of them don’t know me so it was not easy.
Fortunately whenever I looked lost enough someone who either worked at the track or knew from the dirt side of things would help me out and I would get back on track. So first I would like to thank all the super nice people who went out of their way to help me find people or just be where I should be, especially afterwards in victory lane. Thank you!
I enjoy Oswego Speedway very much and I feel just like I did my first few races at the Fulton Speedway way back in 1990 as I just don’t have a good feel for the asphalt world. But I went more back then and it got better so I can only assume it will here too! By the end of the night I was in a groove and the victory lane people made it easy for me to get to the people I needed and I went out on a high note after screwing up to start my day.
I did get seven interviews after the heats and then another seven after the features were over. It was a special night and it had all the feel of a big show because it was! I love it when Super Modifieds and Asphalt Modifieds get together as I love watching these cars but no very little about them. So listen to my stuff on the Audio Page and learn with me as I marvel at the speed of these cars and what it takes to make them faster.
I go back and forth however on which I like better. I like the speed of the Super Modifieds and the fact that no two are exactly alike. But I also like the look of the asphalt Modifieds and that they can rub a little like we do on the dirt side. Plus they are like the perfect mix of old and new with the coupe body and the slick tin work. But those Supers are fast and they can really slingshot around that track. See what I mean?
I got to watch the action from a new location too as I found the upper deck outdoors near turn one to be a great vantage point. Unfortunately I saw a lot of action too as there were several hard crashes and almost all of them happened right in front of me. Those are some expensive cars to be wrecking and asphalt jingles seem to hurt more than they do on dirt.
In the Super Modified feature it was a one, two, father, son finish as Ray Graham beat his son Kody to the line with a pass around the youngster on lap 36 of the 61 lap special honoring Richie Evans. It was a proud moment for him although it was too bad that he missed his son getting back by Joe Gosek in the final corner after Gosek got by briefly with a bonsai move of sorts. But he was busy winning so I think he’s ok with it!
In the ROC Modified race, Erick Rudolph led early until he got tangled with a slower car to bring out the first caution. Four laps later a big cruncher happened on the frontstretch with several cars getting flat bedded back to the pits and others with heavy damage.
Matt Hirschman led until he pitted on lap 120 with dad Tony leading the next lap before he too went pitside. Ryan Pierce led after that until Zane Zeiner got by him with 42 laps to go and held off a very fast Tony Hirschman to get the win.
Again, make sure to listen to the chat with Zeiner as it was a very emotional win for him and one that he did with nothing showing on the oil pressure gauge. That’s right…0. But a phone call during the race gave him the permission to go for it and he smoked his way to a big win with the Modified letting out smoke from both sides almost every time he picked up the throttle in the turns.
The Super Stocks got a little silly as I have been told they can be at this show as the two fastest cars took each other out on back to back occasions late in the 75 lapper. The crowd that does not normally like the full fendered stuff as much as they do the Supers and Modifieds did get loud at the end of this one as at one time there were just five racecars left on the track after all the on track mayhem.
So outside of the fact that I dropped the ball to start the day, it turned out to be a lot of fun. Thanks to Robin Delaney for all his help in the tower as he and I go way back to the Glenn Donnelly days in Weedsport and Matt Thomas who took a lot of time in between races to get me pointed in the right direction. And again, thanks to everyone else who made my trip a lot easier than it could have been without them!
Today I will take my oldest daughter Allie with me to Utica Rome. She has never been there and she is excited to come out and see the racing at this big half mile. After the heat races:

After the feature and A-Main:
Sam Reakes IV won the 15 lap Sportsman feature and told Shane Andrews about his victory.
Steve Poirier spoke with Rich Vleck after he won the A-Main with a pass in slower traffic.
Jessica Zemken led the first 19 laps finishing second and explained how that would motivate her.
J.J. Grasso picked up two spots to finish third and talked with Rich Vleck in victory lane.
Chuck Hebing finished in fifth place and described the super fast racetrack he was just on.
I had a fun night on Friday as I went to Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge for the Fast Track Sprint Car Summer Shootout. It was a hot one and a dry/slick racetrack was to be expected. But somehow it was fast and tacky all night! It was probably the best I have ever seen the racetrack for a mid summer show. Wow!
This threw the teams into a frenzy as the slick track they anticipated was no where to be found. The tough part of this night was it did take a while for the track to come with the humidity as high as it was and there was a very small crowd. It’s too bad as the people who thought about coming and did not missed one heck of a show.
Jessica Zemken was fast on this night as she timed in the top four and started the 25 lap ESS/PST URC A-Main from the outside pole. Unlike at her home track, Utica Rome, Jessica was blasting the top side and was able to keep the lead after a challenge on a restart just past halfway.
But slower traffic would be her demise on this night as she saw Steve Poirier get by while she tangled with another driver. Zemken would race hard but Poirier was faster on this night and he got the trip to victory lane. It was the second race win in a row for the Canadian as he also won the last time out at Fulton one week ago.
Zemken was fired up afterwards as you could imagine and said she will use that as motivation for today’s show, which has a bigger pay day attached to it. I got her interview recorded s well as four of the top five and those as well as the heat winners and six pre race chats are up for you to listen to today on the Audio Page.
Also up today are some new photos that I took as I sweated in the pit area at Rolling Wheels. There are a lot I know you guys are going to like as well as some shots of blank spaces. I’m not sure if it was the online Sportsman boycott I heard about or if teams just didn’t want to race on a Friday before their Saturday track, but there were only ten Sportsman.
The guys that were there did a good job racing with just one yellow in their 15 lapper and from what a few teams told me, the pay was real good. Much better than they expected. I’ll look into that.
Again, this was a tough one as the racing and the track surface turned out to be excellent. But it is always difficult to attract fans on a Friday night special at mid season. Several teams are already committed to a track and their fans will often stay with them. And any time you race on a night that you normally stay quiet on it is always a tough go.
And maybe you can help me on this one. On big Sprint Car shows like this, especially when they have drivers from New York, Canada, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, don’t most of the fans that come to see them come long distances to do so? If that is the case, I wonder if many of them just could not get out of work soon enough and decided to go today.

Well if all went well yesterday, I was able to take a day off of sorts and relax a little on what may turn out to be the hottest day of the year. I hope you were all able to make it through and hopefully what we do here keeps you up so speed and gives you insight into the world of racing.
You know I almost said dirt track racing there, but as you can see we are paying special attention to the big asphalt track in our area as we show some love to the Oswego Speedway courtesy of our friend J Fish. So welcome to any of you who may have just found us.
On the site today we have a lot of good stuff including a young lady who will be racing tonight in Elbridge. I hope you guys are all able to make it to a racetrack tonight and show your support. It is the fun time of the year as there is a lot going on so get out and support you favorite track at a time that it is sorely needed.
No racing in the seat for me tonight as Car Owner Claude Hutchings has some things to do. Like I said on facebook, I was surprised he went as long as he did with me as his driver on a weekly basis. But we will be back, you can count on that and now by missing some weeks we will have to come through the field. Can we win again? Maybe…but I know I had the time of my life last week and it is all because of Claude. Thank you!
Now let’s chat more about what is new for today on the Audio Page. I begin with a fan favorite who will be making a trip back to her home state. Jessica Zemken talks about last weekend at Eldora and looks forward to racing at Rolling Wheels and Lebanon Valley this coming weekend. She told me what she has been learning on the road, how much she enjoyed coming back to Utica Rome a few weeks ago and why she was stuck at the raceshop for a few days.
Dave “DJ” Shullick Jr. explained why he was at Oswego last week and where he has been running mostly this season. He also told Jeremiah Fish how different the non-winged cars are, how the heat would affect the night of racing and thanked the people around him who made it happen.
Ray Graham spoke with Jeremiah Fish about his practice session and how the track could change later in the night. He also talked about the role that the heat plays, how he would change the car over the course of the night and describes what attracts him to the super fast Super Modifieds.

I had a fun day on Wednesday although I can tell you I did not go outside for much. I went out to get dinner, coach my daughter with her running and then hit the pool with her to cool off afterwards. Yep, that was about it for outside activities.
I was busy in the studio and with the keyboard as well as I wrote up a story for the Syracuse Post Standard concerning the situation in Weedsport. It was a busy day for me on Tuesday as I did a lot of work in the studio as well as some busy work. It was another hot one so we made sure to take a dip in the folk’s pool at dinnertime and again after I mowed my overgrown lawn.
On the site today we have a lot of new stuff including interviews with some people who have never been on before thanks to Jeremiah Fish. And tomorrow I have my much anticipated interview with Alan Rudalavage as he turns the tables on me with his series or prepared questions. Today I hope to buckle down and get a lot more done as I would like to lay low on Thursday and maybe take the girls out to Car Owner Claude’s to clean the racecar. It needs it after last week although part of me wants to keep the winning dirt on the racecar for the next time.
I don’t know about you but the heat just has me whipped something fierce. As I sit here typing at 11PM, I almost didn’t make it back down to the studio as I was just being lazy with my wife watching Caddyshack. But I made the midnight deadline no problem.

Bobby Varin talks about his weekend that included a pair of wins Friday night at Glen Ridge. He told me how cool it was to earn his first ever victory in a 360 Sprint Car, how they missed the set up on Saturday and how slick & smooth the track was on Sunday.
Craig Rayvals was on his way to the consi at Oswego and talked about his struggles with Jeremiah Fish. He explained how the car was off, what they were going to do before the last chance race and why he was hoping to get the car a little tighter in the next race.
Chuck Hebing thinks back on his two ESS races at Glen Ridge & Fulton and looks ahead to Rolling Wheels this weekend. He talked about why he will not be worrying about points this Friday & Saturday, why many drivers from other forms of racing have been getting Sprinters and compares the cost to a Modified.
Dan Vauter has had a tough 2011 season and explained what has been going on in recent weeks. He talked about the effect a broken motor & rear end has had, how busy he is during the week and how having just one car to work on will free him up for the family business. Yeah, golf and 95 degree weather do not mix well.
Paul Habeck explains why he is getting out of Modified racing and why he likes Sprint Cars more right now. He talked about his hard charger award at Glen Ridge, why Sprint Car racing has to be cleaner just because of what it is and how much he enjoyed his first trip to Utica Rome.
Brian Sobus spoke with J Fish about moving from a small block to a powerful Super Modified. He compared the feeling to what he did before, described some of the problems they had at the beginning of the year and what the team was working on during that day’s practice sessions.
Art Halliday told me why someone was driving the car with his name on the roof while he was not. He also offered his impressions on the newer Late Model chassis they picked up, how he tore it up on the first night out and how he managed to forget for a moment that he was in the racecar. That’s a good one!
Claude Hutchings Sr. discusses the costs associated with running an open Sportsman in dollars & cents. He talked about how much a recent wreck at Five Mile Point Speedway cost to fix, how much open Sportsman motors are going for these days and the total money you would need for a winning car. Real honest chat here! Wanna race one? Better have lots of extra $$$.
