In this edition of Doug’s Thoughts I give you my take on Super DIRT Week and the future.
Hear from many of the big block drivers as I chat with them as they are introduced on Sunday.
Chris Hile talked about his victory at Fulton Speedway on Saturday at the Win and You’re in race.

I’m finally feeling a little better in the leg department as all that time on my feet on Sunday really wore out the old knees. I’ve been icing them and they are doing much better although certainly not good enough for golf or bowling. I’ll try golf first maybe Thursday and go from there.

We’re still wrapping up Super DIRT Week in our brains and I am sure a lot of you are too. I put up my Doug’s Thoughts today as promised and I really hope you al give it a listen. I know I get long winded but there is so much to talk about and almost all of it is positive.

I will be back at work today in the studio and will have some stuff from there up for you tomorrow as well as more from Oswego Speedway so be sure to come back for that.

Now let’s chat more about what we have for you on the Audio Page as we remember what we all just experienced at racing’s biggest party. And that it was! In this edition of Doug’s Thoughts I give you my take on Super DIRT Week and the future of the event and some of what I picked up on in my six days at Oswego Speedway.

Boy was I sore on Monday after pirouetting in the infield on my feet on Sunday for some 400 laps or so. I was going on nervous energy all night and all week long and now on Monday the tiredness hit e and hit me hard.

I did get some work done in the studio and for Syracuse.com and the Syracuse Post Standard. Today I will be back at it again with hopes of taking a day off later in the week and maybe get in a round of golf if my knees are up to it.

Now let’s chat more about what we have on the Audio Page starting with some other finishers from Sunday’s action. Stewart Friesen tells me how close he came to winning the 358 race at SDW finishing in 2nd, how hard his team worked and his hopes that they might get into some lapped traffic.  

Marc Johnson finished 3rd in the 358 race and explained how he fell back early as he had some problems inside the car and wondered how he lost communication with his sponsor.  

Greg Martin made a late move to finish 2nd in the Sportsman race and talked about his late charge as well as how he was compared to the race winner.  

Rocky Warner explained what went wrong during his third place finish in the SDW Sportsman race, why his throttle was stuck open and how much of a handful it was to drive.

Billy Whittaker described how he felt after a bad crash and offered his thoughts on the event.
Stewart Friesen won the big one at Super DIRT Week for the 5th time and talked about the win.
Brett Hearn came home in 2nd place and talked about how some bad luck early may have helped.
Carey Terrance finished third and explained why the last restart was the key point of the race.
Rob Yetman made it four wins in a row at Super DIRT Week and why he almost didn’t come.
Tim Fuller led every lap to win the Salute to the Troops 100 and talked about his fast little motor.
Dave Marcuccilli picked up the biggest win of his career and told me how some luck went his way.

I had a fun day but a long, long one at Super DIRT Week. It was one of those fall days in Oswego close to the lake that locals know all too well. We knew we would get one of those and Sunday was it. It was cold, it sprinkled a few times and there was a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it.

Two days of action were packed into one so the big races all had to be shortened or we might still be there now. I hustled and barely made it out to grab a bite at dinnertime and back into the infield at the break.

Yes, the track was rough. Yes, a lot of teams tore up a lot of stuff but DIRTcar worked their butts off their whole time and they are going to learn from this and be better prepared next year. You can count on that. Don’t believe me? Listen to the interviews. I never prod people or tell that what to say. That’s why the guys talk to me. So hear it from yourself and remember this year so we can marvel at what it becomes later.

You can read press releases at lots of other places so I will let the interviews speak for themselves. I was totally wiped out and have a lot of stuff in the can so be sure to come back as I am wiped out after all those hours in the infield. I will do a Doug’s Thoughts on this whole thing in a day or two after I get time to digest it all myself. It happens so fast and with my ADHD personality I quickly forget and move on to what is next.

Oh, and I got a big help early from Henry and Al from Canada who let me park at their campsite when I was darned near out of options. (I knew that media lot was too small and not patrolled enough.) They knew who I was as soon as I got out to talk to them and then we walked up the track together. It’s always nice to meet racefans and they are fans of Boyd McTavish and Hig Fab Chassis. What a break huh? Thanks a lot guys. You got me out of a big jam! Hope to see you again.

Now let’s chat more about what we have for you today on the Audio Page as we start at the beginning of the biggest race of the weekend. Hear the engines fire as they get ready to start the Bud Light 200 at Super DIRT Week. I just love pre-race ceremonies when they are done well and this one was!  

Dave Blaney explained what took him out of the race and told me how he is doing these days as well as where he will be racing this coming weekend.  

Danny Varin caught some serious air in turn one and described what happened to his racecar to cause the frame to break as well as why he would still smile on the way home.  

Eldon Payne Jr. ended up in his side after a crash on the backstretch and told me what went wrong on the track while offering his thoughts on the surface he raced on.  

Alan Johnson was involved in a heavy crash and explained why it caught him by surprise as he was hit while sitting on top of another car.  

Billy Whittaker described how he felt after flipping in a bad crash on the backstretch and offered his thoughts on the event as well as why he was still very thankful for the fun he had.  

Stewart Friesen won the big one at Super DIRT Week for the 5th time although at Oswego Speedway this time and talked about the win as well as the pass that got him the lead.  

Brett Hearn came home in 2nd place and talked about how some bad luck early may have helped as well as why his car sounded a little sick afterwards.  

Carey Terrance finished third at Super DIRT Week and explained why the last restart was the key point of the race as well as what their race strategy was.

New on the Audio Page from Super DIRT Week:

Jeff Hachmann talked about Saturday’s rain out and the busy day it sets up for Sunday.
Dan Wiesner recapped his Friday night on the track and offered his opinion on the racing.

Saturday didn’t work out like we had hoped but now it sets up a day today with all four of DIRTcar’s premier divisions on the track for one long day of fun. It all starts at 10 a.m. and will run well into the night.

I waited at home like a lot of people did and once I saw it had stopped I headed out only to find out that the action was postponed. I headed up anyway to see how things looked for myself and it would have taken a lot to get the track ready and with a limited amount of clay on the track, only a few inches in some spots, it needed to dry and that takes time.

Now we will get to see all four divisions in action today and it will be quite the day. I hope to get there by 10 a.m. so I can sit in the back grandstands for a bit and see what it looks like. I was in there for the first laps on Wednesday and I must tell you that the view is spectacular. I had sat on the frontstretch and in the tower at Oswego in the past and the view from the backstretch trumps both of those. It is the lace to be!

Now since there is not much else to talk about let’s go in more detail about the two interviews on the Audio Page that I was able to get before I headed back home. Jeff Hachmann talked about Saturday’s rain out, why they decided to pull the plug and the busy day it sets up for Sunday.

Dan Wiesner recapped his Friday night on the track as he finished third in the Future’s race but blew up in the 30 lap Modified qualifier and offered his opinion on the racing as well as the line he liked to run.

New on the Audio Page from Super DIRT Week:

Matt Farnham got the win in the 2nd Future’s Sportsman race and talked running down the leader.
Joey Ladouceur won the 358 Future’s race by inches and described the work they did to the car.
Max McLaughlin saved his 1st win for the Futures Modified race and talked about the big win.
Tim Fuller took the lead in traffic and talked about how a well-timed yellow helped him late.
Billy Dunn made it a sweep with his 358 win in a W-16 engine and talked about the smooth power.
Brianna Ladouceur picked up her first Super DIRT Week win and explained how she got the lead.
Martin Pellitier spoke through an interpreter and talked winning the 2nd Sportsman triple 20.
Rocky Warner dominated the final Sportsman race and explained why he almost skipped the race.
Danny Varin assumed the lead on the 4th lap and spoke about winning the first triple 30 for Mods.
Stewart Friesen pulled away to win the second Triple 30 and described where he drove the track.
Justin Haers was fast winning the final race of the morning and spoke about getting airborne once.

It was a fun day but a long one on Friday as the final race got over just before 12:45 a.m. They stopped the action in the afternoon deciding instead deciding to work on the racetrack and eventually moving the re-start time until after 7 p.m. and after the sun went down.

I left for a quick trip home to see my kids get off the bus and was not there when all that happened but you could tell the track was dry and four straight days of wind & sun finally took its toll. But give DIRTcar all the credit in the world. The night track was much better and very racy. Listen to the interviews and let the drivers tell you.

Was it a perfect track? Oh heck no! But it was a lot of fun to watch and even the drivers talked about how much they like the configuration and the way the track races. I know a lot of you have been reading social media all day and all I can tell you is don’t even listen to anyone who wasn’t there.

The officials stayed flexible and kept the teams informed as changes were made. The teams stayed pretty calm too as everyone understood what was going on, what needed to happen to make the best of it and they moved quickly to get in and out of the infield when needed.

I had a ball getting to talk to the drivers right as they hopped out of their cars in some cases and thanks so much for Chris Dolack and DIRTcar for allowing me to do this. I desperately need sleep and today is going to be another day where we all will need a little patience as Mother Nature is watering the racetrack right now as I write this at 2:49 a.m.

I hope to see you all there today and dress warmly as it is always a few degrees colder when you are a few miles away from a Great Lake like they are in Oswego. Stay dry, stay optimistic and just think what this event will be like the second time around.

Brianna Ladouceur picked up her first Super DIRT Week win in the first triple 30 Sportsman race and explained how she got the lead as well as how well this year has gone.  

Martin Pellitier spoke through an interpreter and talked winning the 2nd Sportsman triple 20 at Super DIRT Week as he led every lap on his way to the victory. I really should have paid more attention in French class!  

Rocky Warner dominated the final Sportsman race leading all thirty laps and explained why he almost skipped the race as well as what he saw happening with the racetrack.  

Danny Varin assumed the lead on the 4th lap and spoke about winning the first triple 30 for Mods as well as a few minor problems they had afterwards including a hot engine and a chunked tire. It was an old one guys!

Justin Haers was fast winning the final race of the morning and spoke about getting airborne once in turn one as well as how aggressive he was while his lead increased late.

It was another beautiful day on Thursday as time trials highlighted the day at Super DIRT Week. The top six are now locked in for both the big blocks and the small blocks for the weekend.

I did get the top six in each division and some other cool stuff too including some advice from the three major chassis manufacturers for all of you who may be struggling or have yet to hit the track.

I will be back today as we have a lot on the card so look for more tomorrow. I am pretty gassed so be sure to come back and listen to all the audio which now works on all devices.

Now let’s talk more about what we have for you today on the Audio Page starting at a noon luncheon. Roch Aubin showed off his bowling ability at the Super DIRT Week press conference at Lighthouse Lanes and talked about his hopes for Oswego Speedway.  

Mike Mahaney spoke about hitting the wall at Oswego and what he learned from the incident while commenting his Wednesday night race at Weedsport.  

Brad Rouse won the bowling event at the press conference and recapped last week at Fulton and spoke about the young man who has been fast on the Sportsman series.  

Tim Fuller described the deal he put together to run a W-16 engine in a small block at SDW and how cool it felt to put then engine in the pole.  

Billy Dunn qualified his small block in second and spoke about the engine he had under the hood as well as why they almost didn’t bring it to the track at Oswego.  

Brett Hearn locked his 358 Modified into 3rd starting spot and talked about day time qualifying at Oswego as well as how much fun he was having at this new venue.

Justin Haers time trialed 3rd with a familiar car and told me how hard all his crew worked to get it as well as how important it was to be fast in the earlier in the practice. Ah!

Danny Varin spoke about time trialing in fourth in his first attempt to qualify for Super DIRT Week as well as why decided to give this race a shot after passing on it for many years.  

Carey Terrance qualified 5th for the Bud Light 300 on Sunday and talked about being one of three drivers who locked in for both Modified races.

Brett Hearn will start sixth on Sunday and talked about why he thought the track would change on Friday night and again after some weather hits the area on Saturday.  

Billy Colton describes what teams have been telling him about the conditions they are seeing at Oswego Speedway and gives advice to Troyer customers who have yet to hit the track.

Randy Williamson shares what drivers have been telling him about getting around Oswego Speedway during Super DIRT Week and gives advice to Bicknell teams.  

Matt Hearn tells me what he had been hearing from drivers and teams at Oswego Speedway and offers advice to drivers of Teo Pro Cars.

It was a perfect day on Wednesday as the sun was out and the cars got to take to the track at Oswego Speedway as the first action of Super DIRT Week got underway. It all started with a parade through the streets of Oswego at 40 mph. It looked super cool and there a ton of fan videos out there so do a search and see what it was like. Had to be super cool for all the spectators and those who just happened to see it by accident.

The anxiety everyone was feeling was eased a bit as the hot lap sessions went well. There were a few spots on the track, especially in turn four, but overall it was very good with lots of passing primarily on the bottom of turn four and on the bottom of turn one. It was a lot of fun and now the teams will fine tune this morning before time trials for both the 358’s and big blocks today.

Now let’s chat more about the new clips on the Audio Page today that will take you in the pit area at Super DIRT Week. Joey Ladouceur told me how his rookie season in a 358 Modified up in Canada went and his hopes for Oswego and Super DIRT Week.
