That was a lot of rain on Tuesday wasn’t it? Certainly more than last year. So we’ll have to see what today brings as the first practice laps of Super DIRT Week are scheduled for today at three. And don’t forget the parade at noon through the streets of Oswego. It is quite the sight to see.
I have some good stuff for you today and I will be at Oswego today as yesterday was just too wet to go up. I had bowling last night and as I type this I am getting ready for eat dinner and get out the door for that. It will be a nice distraction as my head is spinning already. Heck, it Super DIRT Week so I know I am not alone there.

It was a tough day for me and a lot of people on Monday as we said goodbye to Fillippo Stefano D’Agostino after he died in a motorcycle crash last weekend. Funerals are never easy but when it is for a 24 year old that everybody loved and never had a bad word said about him, it is even tougher.
We were reminded of the frailty of life and how any one of us could go at any time. So don’t live life like it is your last day and do something stupid but don’t put off seeing someone you haven’t seen in a while, don’t put off saying “I love you” to a family member or friend as we do never know if we may get that opportunity again.
I know I’m going to enjoy my life and what I do more than ever as I am truly fortunate to be here after some of the stuff I did when I was 24. In 1985 I was about as wild as you could get and did a lot of dumb things. I am counting my blessings everyday. I have a family I love who loves me back.
I have jobs I love doing and am so thankful that my second family in racing trusts me and knows that I have their best interests at heart and respect what they do so, so much. Now go out and be thankful for what you have today and know that the only person who can your life is you.

It sure was a fall day on Sunday wasn’t it? We dodged the rain drops in Fulton to get in a round of golf but my sore foot did not help my cause. I had fun and made one totally amazing shot so it was all good.
I am going to a funeral for the young man we’ve been talking about who left this earth way too soon. This will be a tough one as he was only 24 years old. We’ll be there for his mom and dad and hope we can make their day not as horrible as it is going to be. Rest in peace young man.

After the heat races:
Tim Sears Jr. talked about his win in the first Modified heat and how close things were at the end.
Pat Ward lost second place late to finish third and told me some of what he learned in the heat.
Ryan Arbuthnot bettered his starting spot with his heat win and told me how starting spot helped.
Jimmy Phelps beat out his teammate for a heat win and talked about how slow the racetrack was.
Max McLaughlin finished second in his heat and told me how hard he raced with his teammate.
Tim Fuller got the win in heat number five and described how little he was changing for later on.
Billy Dunn earned a third place in his heat race and wondered where he would start in the 200.
Rob Bellinger took his small block to a heat win and how he changed his turns to get a little better.
Brett Hearn gained two spots to finish third and predicted how things might go in the feature.
After the feature races:
Brad Rouse led all but 11 laps in the 50 lap Sportsman race and talked about the bottom line.
Dave Marcuccilli went from 6th to 2nd and spoke about how tough it was to make some passes.
Shane Pecore had a third place finish and told the crowd how tough it was getting stuck outside.
Danny Johnson spoke with Adam Buchanan after being the race leader at the lap 100 break.
Jimmy Phelps won his third Outlaw 200 and spoke about the work the track crew did at ½ way.
Erick Rudolph was second at the checkered flag and talked about being on the outside early.
Brett Hearn described how he came from 18th to 3rd and how good the leader was at the end.
Stewart Friesen was the hard charger going from 39th to 4th and told me how passed so many.
Tim Sears Jr. told me about his fifth place finish as well as what happened in the 2nd 100 laps.
It was quite the day and night at Fulton Speedway as better weather than expected caused the track to take rubber in the heat races and make it a bottom groove track for most of the day. The Sportsman 50 lapper was a race to the bottom as was the first 100 laps of the Outlaw 200 until the grader made an appearance got things back to normal.
In the first few heats it was the typical Outlaw Weekend surface. Black, wide and slippery with cars slipping and sliding all over the place as they searched for traction. But somewhere along the way as the sun and wind got going more and more, the bottom slowly became the primary place to be. When the fifth heat got going I wrote down “Track taking rubber?” and showerd it to who was next to me. They said no but once I got into the pits afterwards and started talking to the drivers I realized that yes, it was.
Now sometimes rubbered up tracks can be okay. Sure, it limits passing and makes it tough for the cars on the outside but it is racing and becomes much like watching an asphalt race at Martinsville. You pressure the car in front of you, let them slip up the track and get a spot.
But what happened here was cautions that bred cautions as drivers knew they had maybe a lap or two on the outside before the bottom would heat up again and become basically the only way around. Tomorrow I’ll put up a chat I did with Tim Fuller on topic as he tells me how it happens, what you do and what was unique about the way the rubber was scrubbed of last year at Super DIRT Week.
Congrats to Jimmy Phelps and Brad Rouse on their strong victories. For Phelps it was his third Outlaw 200 victory while Rouse took home his first trophy from Fulton. The track moved things along very well, there was a huge crowd and in the end people saw a pretty good race. Maybe not one to stuff away in the time capsule but day racing is hard across the board.
I’ll be back with lots of fun stuff tomorrow as well as educate you on rubbered up tracks and let you hear from a good percentage of the Modified drivers as they drew for starting spots in their respective heat races. It’s a nice long clip that you’ll be able to hit ‘Play” on and then sit back and relax.

I had some fun yesterday as I took a quick trip to Fulton Speedway to see some of the people and racecars on hand for this weekend’s Outlaw 200. On the site today are all driers who will be racing today and hoping for a big $20,000 victory in the biggest one day Modified show in the northeast.
I’ll be there nice and early and hoping that Mother Nature is a race fan today as they are saying some lake effect showers could be a factor. But I also know that management does not want this to carry over to Sunday with Super DIRT Week looming so be ready for a one day extravaganza today. And if you can’t make it I’ll have lots of good stuff up for you tomorrow.

Allie and I had a nice day as we traveled west to Newark to see Paul Cole at Super Gen Products and learn a few things about generators. They sell new and re-furbished Champion Generators and in our chat I try to help you find the one that might be right for you whether new or refurbed. It was cool.
Then we met Marc Minutolo at Big Mike Auto Repair, looked over his extensive trophy collection, talked racing and then went to dinner at a local diner. It was good too. We had so much fun and we both went some place we had never been to before.
I have those two chats up as well some I did in the studio and last weekend at Fonda. Of course I’ll be at Fulton today and tomorrow as it is Outlaw 200 Weekend. This was the first big race I was associated with when I got started in 1990 so it has always had a special place in heart regardless of what they call it. Hope to see you there although I am laying low today.

It was a rainy day on Wednesday and that’s okay as hopefully Mother Nature will get all of this our of her system before the weekend and before next week’s start of Super DIRT Week. I’ll be on the road with Allie today as we are heading to Newark to meet with friends and we’ll have some interviews up from that trip tomorrow.
When I get back I’ll update the website and start getting the little things ready for our big stretch run here as the busiest time of the year for me is right around the corner. We wish all of you the best as you get your stuff ready and hope everything is going well in the shop.
