New on the Audio Page for today:

Ryan Arbuthnot talked about his plans to race his big block at Can Am and his 2019 race schedule.
Randy Shantel improved as the Utica Rome practice rolled on and described what his day was like.
John Ramsey described how his hot lap session went in a crate Sportsman and a problem they had.
Brandon Gibbons offered his take on racing after his first ever hot laps and the tree he hit off turn 4.

We actually had a little snow in the morning up here although I only heard about and did not see it so I will not be confirming that ugly rumor. But boy it did stay cold on Wednesday despite the fact that it looked nice outside. Better days are coming that we do know for sure.

I’m hoping for a good weekend as Saturday’s forecast is now looking better as Can Am has a Super DIRTcar Series race and Land of Legends Raceway has a practice that Allie and I will be attending. We’re hoping to so a little research on head and neck restraint systems as I have never tried one on and am very reluctant to if I’m being totally honest with you.

Hopefully I’ll feel better about it after Saturday but if I can get by without it I will. Only one track I am planning on running requires them so we’ll see. I’m sure they slow down the time it takes you to get out of the car if you had to and that is my number one fear. Am I wrong? Suggestions would be appreciated.

Now let’s chat more about what we have for you today on the Audio Page starting with a driver getting ready for a big show on Saturday. Ryan Arbuthnot talked about his plans to race his big block at Can Am in their Super DIRTcar Series race on Saturday, described some last minute things he had to finish up and his 2019 race schedule.

John Ramsey described how his hot lap session went in a crate Sportsman, a problem they had in those first few laps and wonders now if he may have to chart a return to racing. Listen your wife John!!!

Brandon Gibbons offered his take on racing after his first ever hot laps this past Sunday at Utica Rome, explained how he hit a tree while spinning off the track and how much fun he had behind the wheel.

Max McLaughlin tells me about his 13th place run in the NASCAR K&N Series on Saturday at Bristol.
A.J. Filbeck gets ready for his first practice laps and tells me about the familiar Sportsman he’ll race.
Brandon Gibbons took his first laps ever on Sunday and talked about some of his racing background.
Tony Veneziano reports on the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series as they raced twice in Arizona.

I had a nice day on Monday as I got a lot of little things done that really needed to get done. Things went fairly smooth so I am good shape and have a few more things checked off my Spring To Do List.

After that I got busy in the studio as I am hoping to take today off to go to the bowling banquet and say goodbye to all my bowling friends who I won’t see again till late September. It was a fun year. I had my first 279 in many years but my average was down a few pins as my pesky knees and an old shoulder injury made it tough. But we had fun and that’s what really matters.

Now let’s chat more about what we have for you on the Audio Page beginning with one of our own who is making a name for himself on the asphalt at one of the most storied tracks on the circuit. Max McLaughlin tells me about his 13th place finish in the NASCAR K&N Series from Saturday at Bristol, describes the part that broke while he was racing for 5th and looks ahead to this weekend at Hickory in a Late Model.

New on the Audio Page from Sunday’s practice at Utica Rome Speedway:

Addison Bowman talked about his Sportsman plans and the two jobs he has that keep him busy.
John Ramsey explained why he had a driver’s suit on and why he recently got out of asphalt racing.
Zach Sobotka watched some hot laps from the grandstand and talked about how his Sportsman was.
Craig Pritchard was the first one who had to make repairs and explained why he hit the wall in two.
Casey Williams was back behind the wheel and told me how it felt after two years off from racing.

I had a blast on Sunday as I got to smell some race fuel and see my first on track action at the Utica Rome Speedway practice. It was quite a day as they stayed on the track till 5:30 or so as some teams got as many as six sessions on the big half mile.

The track was in great shape too, as you’ll hear from the drivers, and everything went very smooth with only a few drivers having some extra work to do due to on track action. Although the track was backwards from a normal Sunday as turns one and two were tacky while turns three and four were slick. The leaves are not on the trees yet so that may have played a part in it but it did throw a few guys off as almost always you can charge into turn three harder. Not on this day however!

I also chatted with several new drivers and we’ll have a few of those up for you tomorrow. And then we’ll follow up with them later in the week to compare what they said before their first laps versus afterwards. So look for a lot of god stuff this week as we get ready some season openers this weekend.

Now let’s chat more about what is new on the Audio Page for today starting with some of my early interviews from Sunday. Addison Bowman talked about his Sportsman plans for 2019, the two jobs he has that keep him busy while attending high school and a crash last year that caused a lot of damage.

John Ramsey explained why he had a driver’s suit on at the Utica Rome Speedway practice, why he got out of asphalt racing and wondered if he might get back in behind the wheel of a Sportsman. Hmm.

Craig Pritchard was the first one who had to make repairs at the track and explained why he hit the wall in turn two as well as what he was going to have to fix before Sunday’s season opener.

Zach Sobotka watched some hot laps from the grandstand and talked about how his Sportsman was in his practice laps as well as how different the surface was compared to a regular Sunday.

Casey Williams was back behind the wheel of a Sportsman at the Utica Rome practice and told me how it felt after two years off from racing as well as why he had mismatching body panels on the car.

Dylan Zacharias runs down his Sportsman plans and talked about his full time daily racing job.
In the latest Doug’s Thoughts I talk about seeing cars on the track today and my plans for 2019.

I enjoyed a beautiful day on Saturday and I hope you all did too. My youngest daughter Katie had her dance recital in the afternoon and then we got some pizzas and had guests over to watch the Final Four. As I type this up tip off time is in 40 minutes and I can’t wait.

I also can’t wait for today as I will be heading out to Utica Rome Speedway for their open practice session. They waited until late Friday to announce that it was still a go and I cannot wait to see you guys, talk racing and get a big whiff of race fuel. It’s gonna be a blast and I hope it goes well for everyone.

Bret Belden tells me how his Late Model looks right now and his plans to race with his granddaughter.
Paul Cole talks about the Build Your Bank Challenge at Land of Legends Raceway on September 28th.

Well let’s all hope that white stuff we saw falling from the sky on Friday is the last of that we’ll see for at least seven months or so. Today should be good and tomorrow should be better so let’s move forward and say goodbye to snow…please!

More good stuff up today including news on a schedule change in Canandaigua. Plus Bret Belden will turn things around at the end of his interview to grill me about what I have going on this year. Don’t miss them.

And of course we’ll be back at work today before the Final Four later tonight which Allie and I will be watching. Plus we have no favorites left which makes it more fun to watch some times. I hope you all have a great Saturday and for those of you who are racing today, have fun and be safe please!

Ernie Saxton previews the Grandview opener on Saturday and comments on some recent racing news.

It warmed up a little bit yesterday and we’re hoping that the people who talk about the weather are wrong with what they are saying for today. There are some season openers and practices on tap so let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope for some racing today.

I am planning on Utica Rome for their practice in Sunday and even though that forecast keeps changing the latest one sounds good so we’ll see. I’ll be in the studio today as well and hoping to get a lot done. One of those will be a Doug’s Thoughts directed at you racers who I have not spoken with so look for that as well.
